Check out the works of Paulo Coehlo. He's brazilian but his works have been widely translated.
The Alchemist in perticular relates strongly to what we explore here.
The Witch of Portobello also resonates strongly.
I'm still working my way through his other novels.

About Paulo Cohelo books:
You can read few of them, but not all at once, because on some point you'll find them not so exciting as at beginning. Then it's good to make brake of few mouths, or half of year and read next one after that brake. Then pleasure of reading his books will come back

For my beloved Lamb. Thank you for your hand on my shoulder.

Re: The Alchemist
The Alchemist is excellent. I also like Veronika Decides to Die.
I've read a few of his others too. I'm kind of over his writing at this point. I think in many of his later novels "the message" has been allowed to override the storytelling making them a bit heavyhanded and obvious.
11 Minutes in particular is NOT a favorite. A book about a young girl's experience of sex work written by an old man? No thanks. Poorly researched, somewhat creepy, very unrealistic and very obvious.
