Itchy spots

Postby Mari » Wed Nov 25, 2009 8:46 pm

Hey there!
I thought I'd post my silly problem here, seeing as I recently learned that physical results may not always have physical causes.
For a few years now I've been having returning itchy spots on my legs, mostly the lower leg.
It started out as just one large spot on my right shin, it was itchy and red and wrinkly but didn't look very disgusting or anything. I'd thought I had gotten infected with something silly and went to see my doctor.
She told me it was eczema, very general, and gave me a cream to put on it. The stuff is quite aggressive, so I can't use it for too long as it makes the skin thinner.

I thought that was it. I put the stuff on, refused to let any water hit that spot as ordered, and it left.
Then later that year it came back, and there were more, even on my left calf etc. Now for a few years it's been coming and going, in summer it is completely gone and then when summer goes on into fall, there they are again. It mostly coincides with that, and with winter going into spring sometimes, I believe, but I haven't paid that much attention to the timing until now so I can't be sure.
Either way, I don't really want to use any of that cream anymore as it will require me to not shower because by now I need to avoid both my lower legs and some spots on my upper legs.
While it looks fairly harmless (in fact, you'd miss the spots unless you were looking for them specifically) they're EXTREMELY itchy and I'm very good at resisting itches - I'm the type to suffer through mosquito bites without scratching them more than once, or scratching until they bleed. With these spots, however, I sometimes ended up scratching until I did bleed. That's very uncommon for me, and I know it's bad/doesn't help.

Of course, googling for it just got me the "You inherited it from a family member, you're stuck with it for the rest of your life, enjoy" routine, which I refuse to accept because it annoys me. Yes my grandfather had a slight hint at skin problems, but I've always had flawless body skin until puberty came at an end. So it's not a "it pops up during puberty" thing either. Sigh.

I just really hope that maybe one of you can tell me what it is, because I'm just about ready to go back to my physician and stay in her office until she fixes it for me. :)

Since no one answered this one yet...

Itching is about not being at peace with where you are at in life, feelin unsatisfied, like you want to get out or get away from where you're currently at. In your case, I'd say there's an impatience along with it, you want things to go faster, you want things *now*. It frustrates you when you don't get it, and your skin reflects that.

Haha that's... actually quite true. Things aren't going fast enough for me. I should have been nearly done with my uni for one thing. ;)
Thank you though!
I've found that in the meantime, drinking enough water helps. I dislike drinking a lot of water but I suppose it's better than nothing. The spots have nearly cleared, despite me still being impatient as hell.

I just saw this post and Rohaa's reply, I think Rohaa is probably right. I know I personally am not the most patient person on the planet, and my legs itch pretty bad at times. I haven't noticed a seasonal connection. Does seems to coincide with my stress levels. Thought it was dry skin at first, but I noticed that lotion did not help at all. Hopefully Rohaa has found your solution.

Well my skin generally got really dry even in other places that weren't itchy (though dry skin can cause itchiness I believe) so I just need to drink more water. I did that for a while, religiously almost (but I still can't get used to it, so it's dying down a bit again) and my skin just seemed to feel much better.

Stress levels, not sure, I haven't paid attention to them because I generally do not seem to react badly to stress that much. I know the uses of stress and that somehow calms me down or prevents me from clinging to it.
Connection with seasons is not entirely proven either, since I don't have enough incidences to prove it with. :)

So that's why Rohaa's explanation makes a lot more sense to me.
