Tinnitus

Do any of you know what, tinnitus is?

I hear noises all the time. Sometimes there buzzing noises other times there ringing noises. The ringing noises are rare and random. Every so often a single hi-pitched ringing noise will start off quite and get louder and stay that way for a few seconds and then slowly die away. But this doesn't happen very often, and im beginning to think it marks something significant in my life or the world around me. Some times the buzzing noises have a pattern to them depending on whats going on in the environment. I have always heard these buzzing and ringing noises even during the times i'm awake and active. Doctors have told me they don't know what causes them just that the condition exists so i'm not crazy, the noises are there. Do you know if the sounds have a purpose?

I have also found that tinnitus some how aids in lucid dreaming. Lucid dreaming has always came to me. Of course in always more often then not, ends up as some form of dream paralysis. I hate that feeling.

I'm surprised that you saw a doctor who didn't know what "causes" tinnitus. Most if not all people have it. The ear is wired to receive signals from the environment and when there aren't any signals (noise/sound) the brain is left with a "wire" that is on but not receiving a signal. So it interprets that as tinnitus, a high-pitched or other type of noise.

After a loud concert or explosion the brain needs time to adjust so you will hear tinnitus/ringing for a while. I can't really explain why, but it describes the normal functioning of the human ear.

Actually, I have never really thought of tinnitus connected with metaphysical experiences, although it could be. I do recall having dream paralysis associated with tinnitus, if I remember correctly. If you live in an overly loud or quiet environment it can start to cause hearing problems. Tinnitus.org and other sites have good info about hearing and hearing loss.

Incidentally, after experiencing some hearing loss, I've had much of it restored (nothing lost above 20db), I discovered, after a hearing test about 2 months ago. I think the supplements I take daily and having done chi kung in the past (I did a 100-day challenge several years ago after a day-long chi kung class) have restored my hearing to a normal state again. I think the middle ranges were in the 40 to 50db range when I was in college. And the average otologist would tell you it's gone forever when you lose it! Obviously not, based on my case, although I wouldn't suggest being careless with your hearing (use earplugs at concerts and around loud noises). Best wishes, Mike
