Just saying hi

Postby lenihanfighter » Mon Feb 22, 2010 8:25 pm

Let me start with a little warning: give me some time, a nice keyboard and a huge white square in which I can type, and I'll most likely end up with a lot of text, so... Be prepared for what might show up below this little warning. ^^;

Now let's start with some quick facts about me. As you may have guessed, lenihanfighter is not my real name. ;) But it is the screenname I use just about everywhere. If you see 'Lenihan', there's a 85% it's me (there are some people who like to use 'lenihan' as well), and if you see 'lenihanfighter', there's about 99% it's me. I can't say 100%, because you never know, there could be someone using that name as well.

I'm a girl (woman?) of almost 24 years old, I live and study in Maastricht (the Netherlands) and I'm a third-year student Japanese. :) I hope to graduate next year and then be off to work, though I have no clue yet what kind of work I want to do. Or can do.

My hobbies/interests include quite a few things, such as writing, cross stitching/embroidery (I currently picked up a lovely book about ribbon embroidery and I can't wait to start on that), cooking, roleplaying, sewing, reading, languages and cultures, fantasy, swords... I've also done quite a bit of walking when I was younger, and I've decided to pick up that hobby again, where I want to try to walk in one year 500km. That, of course, spread out throughout the year. ;) And I hope to start on yoga soon, for some extra weekly exercise.

Now back to my name... maybe some of you are wondering where I got my name from. Well, when I was sixteen years old, I did Irish dancing. Unfortunately, though, my teacher came from America and after one fun year, she returned back to America, which meant I couldn't continue dancing. :( But at the final lesson, she gave us all a keychain, on which stood 'The Lenihan School of Irish Dance', and I loved the sound of 'lenihan'. So I had to do something with it, right? That's when I created 'the Order of Lenihanfighters', a group of people that would fight against the evil and supernatural beings, and... that's where I got my name. Later I found out that 'lenihan' was Gaelic (though I can never remember whether it was Irish or Scottish) and could either mean 'sorrowful' or 'hidden'. Since the 'sorrowful fighters' didn't sound impressive, I went for 'hidden fighters'. ;) So that's what my name means and where I got it from.

As a quick side note: I'd prefer to be called either lenihanfighter, lenihan or just Vreni (which is my real name), but please, please, please... don't abbreviate it to Leni? My grandmother is called Lenie, so whenever someone uses Leni, well... It feels like they mistake me for my grandmother. Which isn't very flattering. ^^;;

Anyway, back to a little more about me... I'm not exactly the most forward person. I wouldn't exactly call myself shy or very closed-off, but it's hard for me to just start talking to someone and make friends. So here actually kind of my plea: please be friends with me? ._.; Aside for two of you, you are already my friends. (And you know who you are. ;)) I think I have a tendency to be a little weird (meaning not quite like most people) and I'm okay with it. I love it. ^^

I've had an interest in esoteric subjects since I was about... fourteen, I think? Maybe it was an age-thing, but I had this feeling that I was a bit lost in this life and felt that there had to be more in life than this somewhat cold and cynical world accepts. I had the feeling that there had to be things in life that could not be explained through science. And maybe from that came the childish wish that I wanted to do magic, just like how they did it on TV. But as childish as that wish may be, it led me to my first book about magic and to my surprise, I found a whole section with books dedicated to the more mysterious things in life. Unfortunately, I've somehow never found the time (or maybe even not the courage) to do anything with this interest of mine, so when Melanie asked if I would be interested in following a course on Elfpath, I thought 'Why not?' I'd read the flyer, I know I found that very interesting and that it certainly got my attention.

So here I am. :) Waiting for the new introductory course to begin. And if you made it all from the top to here (and read it all), then you are amazing and you've deserved a cookie. *places a basket of cookies here* If there is something else you want to know about me, feel free to ask. ^^

Can I call you Leni-chan, or is that better to stay around Vreni? XD
Are you maybe interested a little bit with Manga/anime? I'm asking because it's one of my hobbies.

I hope you'll spend some nice time here and find a lot of new friends :)
See you around :)

@Sztormcia: I see I have found a companion who both likes fantasy and Japanese. ^^ Though if you don't mind, I'd prefer just Lenihan or Vreni (I have no objections against Vreni-chan, even though I do think that sounds a bit odd... I haven't met a Japanese yet who called me that XD), because breaking down Leni-chan would still come back to Leni... :oops:

I was interested in anime. :) My interest in manga was never overwhelming, but I've read some manga. Unfortunately, the study Japanese is very time consuming, which means I haven't had as much time to watch anime like I used to, but I can watch Sailor Moon without subtitles. ^^ ... For about seventy percent. I think I like J-drama more, also because they use more standard Japanese than anime does. :)

Edit: By the way, thanks for liking the picture. ^^; I don't usually like pictures of myself, but I do kind of... love that one... The full version, in case you are interested... :oops:

@kattzyze: Thanks for the welcome. ^^ I look forward to getting to know you better as well! (And being your friend, too. =O)

Heyla Lenihan.

I'm also a fan of manga/anime and a student of Japanese (though I can't watch anything without subs though). Have recently been having a bit of trouble with the language :? but otherwise good... not familiar with J-drama. And fantasy and roleplaying too! Though most of the roleplaying where I've actually roleplayed instead of hack'n'slash, or well, in my case spell-slinging (D+D ha!) is text based (forums or IM).

Oh, and in the picture, is that a kimono or a yukata?

I have a few (mostly decorative) swords -- still haven't found a nice wall- or desk-mount for them though.

*eats cookie* :D

And welcome! (just realised I hadn't said that yet, so here it is at the end instead of the beginning XD )

Hey, LunaSelas. :)

If you want, we could sometimes chat to each other in Japanese over skype. :) It'd be a good practice for me as well. Do you have Japanese as a minor or major and for how many years have you been studying?

I've done all sorts of roleplaying myself. Games, forums, IM... I'm working on setting up a new RP at the moment, but I'm incredibly lazy when there's no deadline, so... it's not really far yet. ^^;

And what I wear on the picture is a kimono, a furisode to be precise. A full view, though I'm not sure if you can see it very clearly, but the difference with a normal kimono is that the sleeves of a furisode almost reach your ankles. :) And it can be only worn by unmarried young women. I don't own it, though... But I've got a purple yukata as well.

Anyway, thanks for your welcome and I hope to see you on skype soon? ^^

Wow, pretty. And you can call me Luna, if you'd prefer. :)

And I'd really appreciate having someone to talk to in Japanese (who wouldn't mind translating for me when I forget stuff). I'm in my fourth semester of Japanese now, so only my second year. I started taking classes in college/university. I'm hoping to turn it into a minor, but haven't declared it yet.

Ah, you're Netherlands? I'm in EST, so being on simultaneously may be a trick, since I'm usually on later my time (very early morning GMT). Hope to see you as well. ^^

Hi Lenihan! :) I met you briefly in the skype chat, but just wanted to pop in and post a message saying hello here. :)

I am definitely into the whole magic and fantasy stuff as well (and, well, anime/manga too)! :P I think we'll get along just fine. ;D

Talk to you soon!

Alright, Luna. :) That sounds pretty, you know. ^^ But yes, being online at the same time is going to be tricky, but I'm sure we'll be able to figure something out? =D One way or the other. This is actually my fourth year doing Japanese, but due to some things (long story) I had to redo the third year, because I missed it. I was in Japan during my third year, and the second semester of the third year has no class. *rolls eyes* And since both third year and fourth year are very tough, I decided to put off my fourth year for one more year. I'm doing Japanese as a major, though. :) Completed all of the basic grammar and now working myself up to nikyuu. I hope I can do it in December...

Anyway, I hope to see you online some day soon. ^^

@Jacob: Thanks for saying hello? ;) And it seems we share some interests, so that's good. But it feels weird to talk here when I could be talking to you on skype, so... I'm gonna head over to skype now and see if you are there? ^^
